"stay-cation"

being newlyweds and all with a single income, brad and i don't have a whole lot of money to go on a bunch of vacations and what not. so, this past weekend we're on a little "stay-cation". instead of packing up our car, heading out to some unknown place and spending money on supplies, hotel/campsites, etc we have opted to have a small vacation like weekend in our very own city- and utilize our free museum passes that we get from our library- as a farewell to summer and brad's summer break.

so i took 1/2 of a vacation day off of work on friday (my classroom is all set up except for 2 bulletin boards so i left at 11am) and we began our long weekend. when i got home brad had made me cream of wheat (my favorite) and then we biked up to the north side of chicago to go to the chicago history museum. it's a fairly small museum but i got to learn a lot about the city, including a little about abe lincoln. for example, did you know that the bed that abraham lincoln was laid in (and later died in) after he was shot was too short for him so they had to lay him diagonally across the bed? after the museum we biked back home, transplanted our tomato plants in a new pot that we bought and then headed down to the gymnastic's gym to work out with brad's friend tim. granted brad and tim did more working out than i did but i did practice swinging on the uneven bars (which i need to do more of), balancing on the beam, and doing straight jumps/sticks for vault. the three of us then went to eat at "white palace grill" which apparently is well known/liked though it did not impress me much and then finished our evening with a movie.

today, we got up, made some blueberry muffins, played a little zelda/read a book and then went to meet our friends dave and nikki to spend the day at the zoo (also free thanks to our library). some of the animals weren't very active since it was quite warm today but the brown bear and the polar bear were the most active i have ever seen. they were both splashing and playing in the water, chewing on their toys, and just having some fun. and then in the rainforest habitat there was a gorilla that was quite active as well. the way she was carrying around this wad of hay and playing with it was pretty funny but also amazing to watch. brad and i then ended our night with some italian sausages and homemade coconut ice cream....delicious

and now the question remains, what to do tomorrow?

long time no see...

so here i am, finding myself in front of my computer with my xanga page open. i had thought about opening a new account with live journal or something similar but then thought why start yet another webpage when i can just start writing in this one again?

so what have i been up to? so very much!
  • last summer i worked my final summer at gull lake. 7 years of service...man, i love that place!
  • this past year i worked as a kindergarten teacher for a type of enrichment program/day care. it's definitely not gull lake but i still like it. i didn't realize how spoiled i was in my employment history, both at biola and at gull lake. it's so different working where i do now, but i'm still treated pretty well.
  • this summer i worked for the same employer for their day care/summer camp. i got to have a lot of the same kids that i had had in my class during the school year as well as meet a lot of the other kids from the other schools in the district. not only did we go on field trips once i week, did i get to teach a cooking class, but i got my first bathing suit tan in 7 years since we went swimming twice a week. loved it!
  • this upcoming week we have training/set up for this next school year which starts in two weeks. i'll be at a different school than i was at last year (which is quite unfortunate) but i'm looking forward to see what God has in store for me there.
  • outside of work, brad and i have been spending a fair amount of time outside, hiking at different state/national parks and backpacking through manistee national forest. God's creation is so incredibly beautiful, his handiwork never ceases to amaze me.
  • living in chicago is also pretty great. the longer i am here, the more that i love it. granted, the first couple months were a bit rough but when you think about it, i was adjusting to a lot of things at the time; graduating college, being married, moving to a new city, working a full time job, being fully in charge of my own classroom...needless to say God taught me a lot and i am forever grateful for those lessons.
  • oh and by the way, married life is amazing!
there is so much more that has been going on but my brain is kind of fried at the moment so as i continue to keep up this blog, i'm such bits and pieces of the last year and some odd months will come out.

so until then...vaya con Dios!

wow...who knew...

that doing observing and minor teaching for an entire school day in second grade and being at the school for the contracted time would be so tiring?!?!

i'm serious...i feel like i don't really do anything but it's exhausting!

there are some plus sides...like the children....
one boy said to another yesterday "no, jesus was born in mexico 'cause that's where mary and joseph were from"
and another boy today asked my master teacher "umm...what grade are they going to teach us about sarcasm? like fifth grade?"

yeah, so it was a lot funnier than what it is coming across right now but i'm blaming my lack of story telling skills on my tiredness :op

love you all!

ooooooh yeah...

that's right...i'm done!

i was able to finish last night around 10ish i think...but then this morning was so crazy hectic! i woke up later than i wanted to, had to run to work to finish some last minute things, run to the registrar to turn in my petition, meeting in the ed department, finish packing, clean my room, check out...etc etc but fear not! i was able to get it all done (i think) and arrived safely in chicago..

ah, yes...a whole month without worrying about school work..marvelous..simply marvelous...
